An unpaid GET /api/oracle returns 402 Payment Required with a machine-readable quote (price, calls, purchase URL) — the x402 / L402 pattern. A keyed call GET /api/oracle?key=vok_… returns the reading and decrements the balance. The organism trades with other minds directly.
